We had a beautiful dinner date with some friends who suggested Rangoon, which I never had on my radar, and I'm beyond grateful to have been introduced to this amazing restaurant! I'm sure to come again soon. Every dish we tried was delicious beyond my expectations. The spices, the flavors, the drinks, were all fantastic! I had to finish every single bite despite how full I was. I especially loved my Burmese Curry with Potatoes and Lamb. That meat was so tender and juicy, I could die! If you're a drinker, I'd highly recommend their Smoke on the Beach with Tequila and Mezcal. Smoky, salty, with a hint of sweetness. I was very happy with it. Our server was also really nice and friendly, joked around with us. He really made sure we were all satisfied and happy throughout our time there.
Food here was good. Not sure if it's authentic Burmese flavor but we had a wonderful curry dish and eggplant/tofu dish. I enjoyed the Basil Eggplant which had fresh basil, tofu, bell pepper, carrot, ginger, onion, chili. It was well balanced. The Nan Gyi Thoke, rice noodles with coconut, egg, coriander, lemon topped with crunchy wonton strips was also tasty. It has a rich curry broth as a base. The interior of the restaurant is interesting. It tried its best to feel like natural Burmese setting. Perhaps the table that was cleaned with made it very sticky. The server we had was helpful and attentive. However we felt rushed to pay the bill when the lady server who came over with the potable machine. And she was hovering over us while we calculated the tip. We felt very uncomfortable about it.
Everything was excellent. Had the garlic noodles and a curry dish. The Indian fancy rice was delicious, too. Great customer service. They were able to squeeze us in for a last minute reservation. Seating was a hair tight but not too bad. But man...restaurants today have eliminated the 15% tip option. Not this place's fault but life in Hawaii is expensive enough.
I first visited with my boyfriend, and it blew us away. We returned with a larger group to try more dishes. Service: Average. The servers were attentive--nothing remarkable, but nothing to complain about. Food: A+. The Rangoon tea leaf salad had the perfect crunch. The crispy tofu was interesting and pretty good, but not a must-have. The biryani, especially the beef, stole the show--absolutely delicious. easy 5, price is also fair
My husband and I were visiting his family on Oahu and met up with a local friend to dine here. Our friend usually orders the tea leaf salad as takeout and since I'm Burmese, asked us to try this place out for its authenticity and taste. We were seated right away at opening on a weekday. We ordered 7 dishes: tea leaf salad, platha with curry, Mo Hin Ga (fish chowder), noodle coconut soup, traditional Burmese beef curry, chicken biryani, and Burmese Indian rice. Tea leaf salad: 4 stars for taste & 3.5 for authenticity. It could use less lettuce and more tea leaf and chili. Platha w curry: 5 stars. The platha was perfection. Beautifully toasted, crispy and fluffy. Better than the curry dip itself. Mo Hin Ga (fish chowder): 4 stars. Tasty, accurately prepared. However, on the salty side and could use more fish. Portion was on the smaller side too for the price it's listed. Noodle coconut soup: I can't really rate this as I usually don't eat this dish but it was tasty, just on the salty side similar to the fish chowder. Portion was small too. My husband liked this dish and he's not even a coconut fan. Burmese beef curry: 5 stars. This was so delicious and reminded me of how my late Pay Pay (Dad) would cook this. The beef was so tender and the curry was great, too. I hope this dish is consistently prepared to this tasting so that everyone can enjoy what we enjoyed on this day! Chicken Biryani: I wish I tried more of this but was so full already. From what I remember, it was very good and I'd order it again just so I can better rate this. Burmese Indian side rice: 2.5 stars. We ordered this to eat w the Burmese beef curry. It was $10 and the dish was so small. It wasn't warm and was on the dry side. We won't order this again if we return. All in all, the dishes were tasty and many worth trying again. Next time we'll probably try more of the noodle dishes like the nan gyi thoke or the shan noodle. FYI- the dishes are small and could be shared if you and your party want to try several dishes. Could also be a personal dish. Service: We were not impressed. The waitress was cordial and attentive but maybe it's a cultural barrier (she seemed to be from Europe?). When my friend handed her credit card for payment while simultaneously asking for the check, the waitress seemed annoyed or bothered and rudely said "don't do that, I will bring the blah blah blah to you." We didn't understand why she snapped as we were a positive, polite and friendly group of 3. All we did was ask for the check. Then 5 mins later she brought over the portable card slider and took our payment. We were dumbfounded why she acted the way she did. I think maybe she was not having the best of day so I'd like to hope she doesn't treat someone else like this. Otherwise she knew the dishes well and I am sure is an asset to the establishment. I got photos of a few dishes. Forgot to snap the rest.
Rangoon features Burmese cuisine. The food has a wonderful assortment of flavors and textures. I took my daughter for lunch as it is her favorite restaurant. It was a meal that I will keep in my culinary memory bank. The Tea Leaf Salad is exquisite, large and sharable or makes a meal in itself. Finely chopped romaine is paired with peanut, soy nuts, sesame seeds, garlic chips, tomatoes and more. The salad is tossed in a perfect vinaigrette that is not too sweet. The Crispy Tofu filled with salad is an amazing and unique app. A chunk of fried tofu has a pocket filled with a tasty slaw topped with crispy fried onion. This app is easily shared. There are four large pieces. Delicious. The Chili Chicken is fantastic, filled with flavor. This spicy dish is filled with chicken, thinly sliced jalapeños, ginger rods, crispy garlic flakes. The flavors are complex and wonderful. By far my favorite dish if you like spicy. Easily sharable. The Shrimp and Eggplant Curry was filled with large shrimp and lots of fresh eggplant. Unfortunately there was no flavor. I did not taste curry at all. The portion was generous. The platha (bread) is incredible. It is an amazing flaky flatbread. Worth the calories. The jasmine rice is delicious. Colorful rice blended with raisins and a number of spices. Wonderful. The food is 5+ stars. What a talented chef! So why a 4 star review? The bathroom was filthy. We were the first patrons of the day and I wanted to wash hands. There were paper towels on the floor. The door was dirty. There was no excuse as we were first patrons. The tables are quite close, so close it is difficult to have a conversation. We heard everything from adjacent tables. Finally, the table was sticky. A five star review must have clean tables. Our server was attentive. I'd come back because the food is incredible.
Been a while, but major tea leaf salad craving. And wanted to get food for my ma for babysitting. - Rangoon Tea Leaf salad is still good, but something is missing. I can't figure it out. - S&P Calamari batter is not light like it used to be. Less oily though, but I miss the old way. - Garlic Fried Rice is pretty garlicky. Tasty. - Basil Chicken is a little sweet for me, but is good. I could go for a little more basil. Overall still pretty good. Service can be slow for downtown so I like to do take out, but only had like 4 tables filled. Food was ready when I got there...just wish they would bag the salad separately. My takeout pet peeve...hot and cold bagged together. $70 for a lot of fried rice, and other portions okay. Calamari definitely is smaller. But I'd guess it all will be good for 4 portions for our size, so not terribly expensive but steep for everyday dining.
What can i say but i was craving the Burmese food at Rangoon after being off island for 8 months! Nigel was here and was as gracious and helpful as ever. The food came fast, fresh, delicious and unique. The only disappointment were the mocktails...which came slowly, after most of the dinner was consumed. And the penicillin drink had a very very large ice cube which was at least 1/2 of the drink (2"x2" cube?). The food was amazing and too rapidly consumed before photos . So do come with an open heart to try some truly delicious dishes!
